Artist Statement

I’ve been entranced by flowers for as long as I can remember. In some of my earliest memories as a child in southern Illinois I am wandering through the backyard with my sisters as our dad pointed out the flowers and taught their names. His dramatically enunciated pronunciations “RHO-DO-DEN-DRON” and “FOR-SYTH-I-UH” are burned into my brain.

I spent my childhood living in Massachusetts, Illinois, and Maine. Since then, my job has brought me to Texas and now to the gulf coast in Alabama. No matter where I have lived or traveled, the local flowers capture my attention and provide no shortage of subjects to photograph, draw, and paint.

From the most intricate dahlia to the most humble daisy, each flower reminds me of the place, the smell, and the people who I was with. In my watercolor and marker artwork, I aim to capture and preserve a visual diary of the colorful and unique flowers I have encountered.

About me

I’m a part time artist and full time engineer living in Mobile, AL. While I don’t have a degree in art, I can’t call myself self-taught. I’ve been lucky enough to learn from many people. My first art lessons were in Olney, IL where Mrs. Z introduced me to a variety of techniques for creating artwork to show at the county fair for my 4-H projects. Since then I’ve benefited from courses in school, online, and from local artists in my community.

In 2020, I spent less time commuting, traveling, and catching up with friends. I dusted off the art markers that I purchased in college almost 10 years ago and spent my extra time making artwork. I can’t wait to keep exploring new mediums and improving my skills.
